What's That Smell? 4 Ways To Keep Odors Out Of Your Spa

Posted on: 10 July 2020

If you own a spa, you want to keep the odors away. Foul odors can undermine your ability to enjoy your spa. Luckily, there are some steps you can take to keep the odors away. Most of them are simple solutions to a smelly problem. Here are four things you can do to help keep odors out of your spa.

Start With Clean Water

If you haven't used your spa yet, you might be getting ready to start it up. If you're going to use the same water from last year, you can expect some odors. That's because water can become stagnant after a while. When that happens, foul odors develop quite quickly, especially once heat is added. The best way to prevent spa odors is to start with clean water. Before you get stuck with foul odors, drain your spa and start fresh. Fresh water and a clean spa will get you through the summer without odors.

Install a Fresh Filter

If you haven't changed the spa filter in a while, you may end up with foul odors this summer. That's because old filters can harbor odor-causing bacteria. Washing an old filter won't get rid of the bacteria that can cause odors. Before you start using your spa this summer, replace your old filter. After that, it's a good idea to switch filters at least once a month. Try to keep at least one spare filter. That way, you can have a clean filter ready to go each time you need to make a change.

Give Your Water a Shock

If you've already started your spa this summer, and you're noticing odors, it's time to shock the water. High doses of chlorine can help to kill the bacteria that are causing the odor. Shock is especially helpful when you're experiencing foul odors and cloudy water. You can use premixed shock packets, or you can talk to your spa dealer about using extra chlorine to shock your water. If you're not sure your spa needs a shock, take the water in for testing. A simple test will let you know if your water will benefit from shock.

Stay Current With Maintenance

Finally, if you want to avoid spa odors this summer, keep up on the maintenance. You may be taking care of daily chlorine levels. But, your spa still needs professional maintenance throughout the summer. With proper maintenance, you can enjoy a fresh-smelling spa all summer long.
